Burning Stories: art, food and stories

Burning Stories is a new opportunity to tell stories of resilience and strength that resulted from the 2009 Black Saturday fires in Bendigo.

Burning Stories is a project initiated by Seeds Bendigo, and gives people who experienced the Black Saturday fires an opportunity to tell their story, and the unexpected good things that came from that experience.

Community artists Ben Winspear and Cassie O’Toole will also be on hand to help people create beautiful mosiac art.

Alongside the stories and art, a pizza oven will be build, acknowledging that community is often built around food.

There are some special school holiday times for Burning Stories – download program here.

Who knows, you might even feel inspired to vote!

Creation vs Empire Event

St Matthew’s will be hosting an event called “Creation vs Empire” in conjunction with Pace e Bene.

Creation vs Empire 2013

One of the speakers, Wes Howard-Brook,  had this to say in a recent article:

We live amid two diametrically opposed reigns of power. One of these is animated by the spirit of what Jesus calls “mammon”: that power of wealth which seeks to dominate and control all else, including people, the earth and other competing spirits. The other is animated by the spirit of God, which constantly seeks to heal our imperial brokenness and to restore the original, created glory and dignity of all creation.

We hope you can join us!

Future of Christianity

Bishop Andrew Curnow (Anglican Diocese of Bendigo) and Dave Fagg (Convenor, Seeds Bendigo) will debate the future of Christianity and the church in Australia.

The latest Census data show that Christian belief is declining in Australia, and many churches have struggled to meet this challenge. Though they come from differing church backgrounds, both Bishop Curnow and Mr Fagg are passionate about exploring new forms of Christian spirituality and community in Australia.

Bishop Curnow will speak from his experience in the institutional church, and Mr Fagg will speak from his journey in small Christian communities (Seeds Bendigo is a small Christian group in Long Gully).

Bishop Curnow said, “I suppose a key question is what place, if any, the church has in the future of Australia. Any future has to include forms of Christian life and community that go beyond what we currently have.”

Mr Fagg said, “Many Australians are disillusioned with institutional church, but not with Jesus. Churches need to be communities that more fully live out what Jesus advocates: loving our enemies, compassion, justice and truth.”

This event will be accessible to anyone concerned about spirituality, religion, faith and the church.
